The dating-app market is contracting from both ends at once

What is changing

Young adults are giving less time and effort to forming romantic relationships than earlier cohorts, and the ones who do date increasingly say they would rather meet in person than through an app. The addressable pool shrinks while the on-app share of it shrinks too.

Why it matters

Any model that assumes a growing base of app-based daters — subscriptions, in-app ads, and the nightlife and delivery spend around dates — is sizing off the wrong curve.

Opportunity

Plan for a flat-to-declining app-dater base: shift toward in-person formats and trusted circles, and price for retention on an ageing cohort rather than growth.

Risk

Engagement and revenue can hold for a few cycles on a shrinking, ageing user base, then drop sharply.

Emerging evidence

What Quettor is checking next

Is the on-app dating population actually falling, or just getting older and smaller at the edges?
